The Power of Gratitude

The Power of Gratitude

As Thanksgiving approaches, gratitude naturally comes to mind. In the University School of Milwaukee College Guidance office, we’ve found that gratitude plays a more important role in students’ Upper School journeys and college admission processes than many realize.

For the past three years, the University of Pennsylvania has asked applicants to “write a short thank-you note to someone you have not yet thanked and would like to acknowledge.” In our office, we also require seniors to write thank-you notes to their teacher recommendation writers as part of our final senior seminar session. While expressing appreciation might seem like a simple matter of good manners, we’ve found that gratitude has a much deeper impact on students’ experiences.

Research shows that gratitude boosts mental health. It can lead to lower stress, better sleep, and increased happiness and satisfaction. Consciously recognizing the positive aspects of life helps foster a more optimistic mindset. One of the most valuable effects of expressing gratitude, however, is its ability to strengthen relationships. When we show appreciation, others feel valued, and our connections grow stronger. That is a powerful skill—in school and beyond.

Building meaningful connections with classmates and teachers is at the heart of a USM education. Alumni often tell us these relationships were among the most memorable parts of their experience. When we begin working with underclassmen, we encourage them to visit teachers outside of class, even when they don’t need extra help. Doing so builds trust and familiarity, which becomes especially important when challenges arise. These strong relationships also contribute to thoughtful, detailed recommendation letters that help USM applicants stand out in the college admission process.

Developing the habit of thanking the people in our lives is a wonderful practice. It supports USM’s Common Trust value of kindness, boosts students’ well-being, and fosters healthy relationships that will benefit them far into the future.

On behalf of my colleagues in the College Guidance office, I want to express our sincere gratitude for the opportunity to know and support such incredible students throughout their academic and personal growth. We wish you all a warm and joyful Thanksgiving!
