The Power of Play: Why Summer Camp is Essential for Youth Development

The Power of Play: Why Summer Camp is Essential for Youth Development

By Sabrina Raber

As the holidays draw near and the air turns crisp, it might feel early to think about summer—but what better time to dream of sunny days and adventures at camp?

During the school year, our focus is on academic growth. The beauty of summer—and of camp—is that it offers children the space to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them. Through these experiences, they build resilience, confidence, and essential life skills such as empathy, kindness, respect, and teamwork. Camp isn’t just a break from school; it’s a purposeful environment for youth development that nurtures success both in and beyond the classroom.

Research consistently shows that summer programs have a lasting positive impact on children’s physical and mental health, as well as their social and emotional growth. A study by the RAND Corporation found that children who regularly attended summer programs demonstrated stronger academic performance in math during the fall and spring following their first summer, compared to peers who did not attend. After a second summer, those same children showed measurable gains not only in math but also in language arts and social-emotional skills during the following school year.

Summer camp opens the door for children to form new friendships, connecting them with peers beyond their everyday school community and helping them discover shared interests through new experiences. It’s a place where confidence blossoms—where children can explore new passions, uncover hidden talents, step outside of their comfort zones, and grow through both success and challenges in a safe, supportive environment.

Beyond personal development, camp cultivates essential skills that support success in school and life. Campers practice teamwork on the field, learn conflict resolution among peers, and develop independence through daily routines. Each of these experiences reinforces empathy, adaptability, and leadership, the very qualities that define thriving learners and responsible community members.

At its core, camp is a community built on shared purpose and connection. Through collaboration, resilience, and confidence building, children come to understand that they are part of something greater than themselves, and that through working together, they can make a meaningful impact on the world around them.

There’s no better place for children to grow, explore, and thrive than summer camp. At USM Summer Camps—now proudly accredited by the American Camp Association—we are dedicated to our mission of building character, confidence, and lifelong skills in every camper.

We are so excited to announce that, for the first time ever, registration for USM Summer Camps is open before the school's winter break! Visit our USM Summer Camps website now to view our offerings and register for Summer 2026!
