University School of Milwaukee welcomes Tom McManus, who will serve as the 10th head of school starting July 1, 2027

Dear USM Community,

University School of Milwaukee is celebrating 175 years of excellence this year, and throughout its history, the school has remained faithful to its mission of providing an exceptional independent school education. In that spirit of celebration and educational excellence, I am delighted to announce that Tom McManus has been selected to serve as USM’s 10th head of school, effective July 1, 2027. His appointment by the Board of Trustees follows a unanimous recommendation from our search committee.

Tom is set to become the next in a line of great USM leaders. In his nearly 30 years in education, he has built an impressive resumé spanning school leadership, college admissions, governance, and institutional strategy. Tom will join our school next year from Montgomery School in Pennsylvania, where he has served as head of school since 2020. Prior to joining Montgomery School, he served as CEO and head of mission at Revolution School in Philadelphia, which followed progressive leadership roles at Mid-Pacific Institute (Hawaii), St. Paul’s School (Md.), The Tatnall School (Del.), and The Groton School (Mass.). Tom also worked in college admissions leadership at the University of Pennsylvania, his alma mater. I welcome you to learn more about Tom in this brief biography.

Based on alignment with our head of school position description and robust feedback from across the entire USM community, Tom emerged as an intellectual, collaborative, and visionary leader who can steward our school into the future. He possesses a wonderful capacity to connect with and inspire others while demonstrating a keen ability to honor tradition and academic excellence amidst a rapidly evolving educational environment—all traits that were sought by our community in its next leader. Tom exudes passion and excitement for learning, engaging in all facets of the student experience. The joy he radiates is contagious and inspiring. As he expressed to the search committee, he envisions a future in which USM not only sustains but thrives as a beacon within the educational landscape. Tom very much looks forward to being a part of our community, sharing that it was clear to him that USM is a place where “generations of meaningful and purposeful lives are shaped.” I look forward to welcoming Tom, his wife, Micheline, and their four children, ages 27, 24, 20, and 7, into our school community in the months ahead.

A year ago, the process of finding USM’s next head began in earnest when Steve Hancock shared with me his plans to depart at the end of the 2026-27 school year. I am grateful for his gift of time to allow us to complete a thoughtful and comprehensive search process, and I look forward to his continued leadership over the next year. I greatly appreciate the dedicated work of our search partner, Carney, Sandoe & Associates, which provided more than 140 national and international candidates for our position—a testament to USM’s strong reputation and the exciting opportunity the role provides top education leaders. I also want to thank our search committee, led by school parents and trustees Julie Gilpin and Jan Pirozzolo-Mellowes, for their steadfast commitment to this important work.

Finally, thank you to all of you for your engagement and participation in this process. Your input and feedback played a critical role in our work. On behalf of the board, I hope all of you enjoy a healthy and happy summer and look forward to sharing more in the coming months about our head transition plans.

Sincerely,

Leslie M. Tector ‘87
