Former University School of Milwaukee boys’ varsity hockey coach Cal Roadhouse, and longtime Milwaukee Winter Club coach and volunteer Bob Peschel, are among four individuals selected for induction to the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 11 in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Both Roadhouse and Peschel are being honored for their commitment to the growth and development of hockey in the state of Wisconsin and beyond.
Roadhouse grew up playing hockey in Calgary, Canada. After a successful coaching career in Elmbrook, Illinois, he coached at University School of Milwaukee for 15 seasons, compiling a varsity record of 248¬¬–103–13. During that time, his teams were section champions eight times, and brought home WIAA state championship titles twice, in 2006 and 2010. He also served as a member of the board of directors for Milwaukee Winter Club, the oldest youth hockey club in Southeastern Wisconsin. During 27 years of coaching, Cal Roadhouse freely shared his knowledge of the game and helped Wisconsin hockey become what it is today.
“Personally, it was somewhat intimidating playing for Coach Roadhouse, given his playing and coaching successes,” said former player Benjamin Jurken. “You never wanted to disappoint him, but despite that high bar, you always knew he had his players’ and the school’s best interest at heart. Every day he demanded hard work and integrity from everyone in the program, and I believe he was instrumental in preparing many for lifelong success. It was truly an honor and a pleasure to call Cal Roadhouse my coach.”
Peschel has been tirelessly dedicated to Milwaukee Winter Club, the Wisconsin Hockey Officials Association (WHOA), and to Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) Region 5. As a coach and volunteer, he served Winter Club and Region 5 for 11 years, either as a coach, manager, or officiating coordinator. Beginning in 2001, he served USA Hockey, WAHA and WHOA on the officiating side. He began as a WIAA official in 2006, working multiple regional and sectional playoff games, and two WIAA girls’ hockey state tournaments. He has been a WHOA Region Director for eight seasons and vice president for four years. He has also been involved with the WEHL and the Kohlman Cup. As a mentor, he has passed on his love of the game to his son, Kyle, who serves as a NCAA Division III official and a USA Hockey seminar instructor.
