Cross Country Runners Compete at State

Congratulations to Drew Stephens ’22, Thomas Stephens ’22, Mya Hartjes ’23, Bella Grenier ’25, and Annie Norman ’25, who competed as individuals at the WIAA Division 2 Cross Country State Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. Drew finished in 3rd place with a time of 16:23.2; and Thomas finished in 4th with a time of 16:24.6.

The girls battled it out on the field for an impressive race. Bella Grenier finished in an impressive 15th place with a time of 19:42.6. Annie Norman ’25 ran a steady, measured race and finished in 39th place with a time of 20:36.7. Mya Hartjes ’23 raced amongst the top 10 until the final 300 meters, where her body rebelled. After collapsing, she managed to stagger up the long hill to cross the finish line in 103rd place.

“I am so proud of these athletes,” said head coach Eric Pilling. “On the toughest course with the deepest competition, they raced with confidence, ferocity, and heart. While Drew and Thomas fell a little short of their ultimate goals, finishing in 3rd and 4th places in a tremendously competitive field is an excellent result. This team showed that USM running is a force in the present and the future.”

Drew ’22 and Thomas ’22 Stephens were recently featured in a story in the Ozaukee News Graphic newspaper.
