On Thursday, May 26, all Middle School students at University School of Milwaukee enjoyed a screen-free day at school. That meant no tablets, no computers, and no phones. Parents were urged to keep those devices at home and to extend the screen-free day throughout the evening. In addition, teachers worked to ensure that any homework assigned that day could be completed offline.
Studies have shown that reducing time spent using technology can result in increased wellbeing, stronger ability to express empathy, and improved mental health. “I hope that this face-to-face time builds our community’s culture by allowing for more organic, personal interaction,” said Elaine Griffin, head of Middle School. “It’s our duty as educators to intervene in this ongoing, increasingly serious crisis of screen time addiction.”
