USM Welcomes Musicians

On Wednesday, May 18, composer Michael Sweeney visited the 7th and 8th grade band classroom at University School of Milwaukee to work with the musicians on a song he composed. The song is called “River of Hope,” based on the folk song “Down in the River to Pray.” Sweeney is the director of band publications for Hal Leonard in Milwaukee, one of the largest publishers of printed music in the world.

In addition, professional musicians and alumni visited Upper School students on May 18 to discuss their experiences in the performing arts industry, the colleges that supported their passions, and what they needed to apply to conservatories and liberal arts programs. Their backgrounds range from classical music to musical theatre, pop/electronic music, and music business. The guests were: Jeffrey Melvin ’15, Hope Riesterer, Ethan Shuler ’16, and Philip Shuler ’15.
