University School of Milwaukee Middle School students enjoyed two special guests on Tuesday, Sept. 6: Caron Butler, former NBA all-star and current assistant coach with the Miami Heat, and author Justin A. Reynolds. Butler and Reynolds teamed up to write “Shot Clock,” which was released on Sept. 6, and they kicked off their very first book tour at USM.

“Shot Clock” is the first book in a middle school series about a young boy trying to make his mark on an AAU basketball team coached by a former NBA star in his hometown. Butler, who is from Racine, Wisconsin, stressed to students the importance of connecting with their communities and sharing a positive outlook. Both shared their backgrounds, discussed how they got started in their careers, and answered questions from the audience. Butler previously has written “Tuff Juice” about his road to becoming a professional basketball player. Reynolds has written several books, including “Opposite of Always,” Early Departures,” and “It’s the End of the World and I’m In My Bathing Suit.”

“Caron and Justin’s presentation was very positive and it resonated really well with the Middle School community,” said Middle School Librarian Ivana Renteria. “They really encouraged students to lift each other and spread joy as they pursue their goals.”

Many thanks to Boswell Books and the USM Parents’ Association, which supported the author visit.
