Chess Team Wins Championships

The University School of Milwaukee chess team competed in two recent competitions: The City Chess Championships and Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation Grade-level Tournament. The USM team had strong finishes in both events as they prepare for the state competition later this month. Congratulations to the team members and Fred Lange, chess team coach and Upper School math teacher.

City Chess Championships
For the sixth year in a row, USM’s chess team won the City Chess Championships. More than 100 students from 16 area schools gathered for the tournament, held on Friday, March 10. 

USM fielded two varsity teams, earning 1st and 6th place in Division 1. Team A, which won the tournament, consisted of Hersh Singh ’24, Krish Vasudev ’24, Aradh Kaur ’26, Jind Kaur ’28, and Alex Chen ’25.

Team B, which earned 6th place, consisted of Julian Palmer ’24, Ezran Anastas ’25, Spencer Graskamp ’27, Aditya Pillai ’23, and Jiyan Singh ’30.

In Division 3, the following students competed and earned individual trophies: David Dorn ’28 (4th place); Lawton Strickroot ’26 (6th place); Elijah Myers ’26 (7th place); Sam Yuan ’29 (10th place); Emily Pan ’27 (11th place); Escher Whitmore ’35 (12th place); Gyan Gupta ’26 (16th place); and Anna Finley ’25 (20th place).

Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation Grade-level Tournament
The Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation’s 16th annual grade level tournament was held on Saturday, March 11 at UW-Milwaukee. The event had a record-setting 346 pre-registrations, but that did not slow down USM’s team. In fact, each team member earned either 1st or 2nd place for their grade level, a first for USM.

Congratulations to the following students:
Escher Whitmore ’35 took 2nd place in the kindergarten section
Jiyan Singh ’30 took 1st place in the 5th grade section
Jind Kaur ’28 took 1st place in the 7th grade section
Spencer Graskamp ’27 took 2nd place in the 8th grade section
Hersh Singh ’24 took 1st place in the high school section
Aradh Kaur ’26 took 1st place in the 9th grade section, and 3rd place in the high school section
Alex Chen ’25 took 2nd place in the 10th grade section, and 7th place in the high school section
