Congratulations to members of University School of Milwaukee’s middle school math team, who competed in the state MATHCOUNTS competition and finished in 5th place out of the top 24 teams in Wisconsin. Sami El-Hajjar ’27, Jind Kaur ’28, Iris Liu ’28, and Simi Patel ’27 represented USM at the competition, held in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on March 4.
For the second year in a row, El-Hajjar will travel to MATHCOUNTS Nationals in May as one of the top four students in Wisconsin. At nationals, El-Hajjar will compete against the top 224 mathletes from across the United States and its territories. Additionally, Patel ranked 24th in Wisconsin amongst the top 100 math competitors present at the state level competition.
USM’s middle school math team is coached by five Upper School students: Mairin Jarvis Castellano ’25, Anand George ’26, Anjali George ’24, Harini Tallam ’24, and Zara Vaseem '24. The team practices each Monday from October through February. MATHCOUNTS is the preeminent national middle school math competition in the United States.
