Promoting Esports in Wisconsin

The University School of Milwaukee Esports team attended the 2023 Wisconsin Esports Summit on Monday, March 6 at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. The one-day event brought together individuals, businesses, community leaders, and gamers interested in learning and connecting around esports in the region. It included a panel discussion, focused networking, gameplay, breakout sessions, and more. USM’s Esports team was highlighted during the event for its diversity and commitment to inclusivity and belonging.

“The Esports Summit was a lot of fun and a great opportunity for us to network with local gaming studios and discuss how to put Wisconsin on the map in terms of Esports,” said Kayleigh Coleman ’23, Esports team president and Overwatch team captain.

“I’ve been playing video games my whole life, but I’ve never been to an Esports event,” added Max Molina ’23. “It was really fun to see college teams playing in person, along with livestreaming and commentators.”

Established in the 2019–20 school year with 20 students, USM’s Esports team has grown in popularity. Currently, the team has upwards of 50 students who play a variety of games, all while working on tangible skills like teamwork, communication, resilience, collaboration, and leadership. “I think my favorite part of the day is after I finish my homework; I get to just relax and play a few games online,” said Coleman. “We don’t take anything too seriously, and it’s just a time we can bond as friends.”

The following Esports team members attended the summit:

Kennedy Bishop ’23, Kayleigh Coleman ’23, Marcus Hoyt ’26, Nate Hoyt ’24, Maximus Molina ’23, Brooklyn O’Bryant ’23, Mara Sadek ’23, Yosie Vargas ’23, and Dr. Laurie Walczak, Upper School English teacher and Esports team coach.
