Students Host Food Drives

Students at University School of Milwaukee hosted food drives to benefit local families in need. Members of the Upper School’s Spanish Honor Society participated in a food drive and bake sale to support Notre Dame School of Milwaukee’s annual Thanksgiving food basket drive. Between the money raised from the bake sale and the food donations, students were able to donate enough baskets to feed 17 families at Notre Dame School.   

Spanish Honors Society has been making and delivering Thanksgiving food baskets to benefit area schools for many years. “This year, the Notre Dame School demonstrated a need for Thanksgiving goods, and we were able to help fulfill this need,” said Lucy Flack ’23, co-leader of Spanish Honors Society. “The volunteer turnout that we had for this year was unprecedented: we have two almost 5-feet tall stacks of complete baskets that were delivered to the NDS on Nov. 17. We’re thrilled that we were able to use our resources to fulfill the needs of those who need them.”

Many thanks to Flack and Mackenzie Petersen ’23, co-leader of Spanish Honors Society, as well as other student members of Spanish Honors Society and faculty volunteers who made the event possible.

In addition, members of the Middle School Student Leadership Club collected approximately 1,400 non-perishable food items to benefit the Kinship Community Food Center, formerly the Riverwest Food Pantry, with 7th grade students contributing the most items. “I'm so grateful to the USM families for their support of this food drive and very proud of the Middle School students for their enthusiasm and efforts,” said Emily Ihrke, Middle School Academic Resource Center teacher and director of the Ethical Leadership program. “They were inspired to make an impact in the larger community: they planned and promoted this event; and organized, bagged, boxed, and carried the items to the volunteers who transported the donations to the food pantry.”
