Aida El-Hajjar ’27 Wins Award Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Aida El-Hajjar ’27, a freshman at University School of Milwaukee, won second place in the art contest category, grades 9 through 12, as part of the 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration. As part of the celebration, students in kindergarten through 12th grade were invited to interpret Dr. King's words through art, speech, and writing contests centered around a common theme. This year's theme was What Affects One … Affects All. The annual event is hosted by the Marcus Performing Arts Center.

El-Hajjar’s piece, titled “Our Struggles Unite Us,” was created digitally using Adobe Fresco. "The inspiration for this piece is a photo I took from a recent Palestine protest in Milwaukee," said El-Hajjar. "I wanted to encapsulate MLK's famous quote, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.'"

Entries are judged on clarity, creativity, and originality in representing the contest's theme. Participants are invited to attend a birthday celebration event at Marcus Performing Arts Center on Jan. 15, which is free and open to the public.

El-Hajjar entered the same competition last year, where she won first place in the art contest category, grades 6 through 8.
