University School of Milwaukee English students heard a special presentation from Jeffrey Gingold, author and speaker, about his father’s experiences during the Holocaust. Sam Gingold was only 7 years old when Germany invaded Poland in 1939. He and his family were taken to the Warsaw ghetto, where he helped his family survive by smuggling food and medicines.
Jeffrey Gingold is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning author who has been featured on several national television and radio shows, as well as in magazines and global publications. He is a speaker from the Holocaust Education Resource Center, a program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
Gingold’s spoke to 9th grade students on Monday, May 6. His visit was an extension of the students’ readings of graphic novels “The Complete Maus: A Survivor’s Tale” by Art Spiegelman, about the Holocaust; and “They Called Us Enemy” by George Takei, Justin Eisinger, Steven Scott, and Harmony Becker, about Japanese American internment during World War II. Gingold had previously spoken to USM students in 2022.
Exposing students to diverse experiences and narratives related to World War II support USM’s guiding principle of inclusion, where a recognition of and respect for diverse backgrounds help students learn to think broadly, critically, and independently.
