University School of Milwaukee’s chess teams competed in two recent competitions: The City Chess Championships and Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation Grade-level Tournament. The teams had strong finishes in both events as they prepare for the state competition later this month. City Chess Championships
For the seventh year in a row, USM’s chess team won the City Chess Championships. More than 100 students from area schools gathered for the tournament, held at USM on Friday, March 8.
USM fielded four teams, earning 1st, 2nd, 11th, and 18th places. Team A, which won the tournament, consisted of Hersh Singh ’24, Aradh Kaur ’26, Jind Kaur ’28, and Jiyan Singh ’30.
Team B, which earned 2nd place, consisted of Krish Vasudev ’24, Alex Chen ’25, Julian Palmer ’24, and Ezran Anastas ’25.
Team C earned 11th place and included Ayan Iyengar ’29, Sam Yuan ’29, David Dorn ’28, and Sophie Kouklin ’29.
Team D came in at 18th place and included Jason Wu ’27, Lawton Strickroot ’26, Niko Kostopoulos ’32, and Escher Whitmore ’35.
Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation Grade-level Tournament
The Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation’s 17th annual grade level tournament was held on Saturday, March 9 at UW-Milwaukee.
Congratulations to the following students for their individual finishes:
Hersh Singh ’24 took 1st place in the high school section
Aradh Kaur ’26 took 2nd place in the high school section
Jind Kaur ’28 took 1st place in the 8th grade section
Jiyan Singh ’30 took 1st place in the 6th grade section
Escher Whitmore ’35 took 3rd place in the 1st grade section
