MathCounts Team Earns 2nd Place

University School of Milwaukee’s MathCounts team earned second place in a regional event held on Saturday, Feb. 1 at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Congratulations to the Middle School students who participated: Abe Herrick '30, Ayan Iyengar ’29, Sophie Kouklin '29, Alex Lemieux '31, Mae Lilly ’29, Soren Moeser '31, Eli Mondano '31, Kiran Ramanujam ’29, Jiyan Singh ’30, Mishee Singh ’30, Sudarshan Tallam ’30, Niki Wagner ’29, and Sam Yuan ’29.

Of those who competed at regionals, six ranked in the top 25% of the Milwaukee region and are advancing to the state competition in March: Jiyan Singh, ranked 1st; Yuan, ranked 4th; Wagner, ranked 7th; Iyengar, ranked 12th; Lilly, ranked 15th; and Mishee Singh, ranked 19th. This is the first year that six USM students have advanced to state, which includes the top 100 mathletes from Wisconsin. The top four competitors from the state competition will then travel to the national competition in May in Washington, D.C.

USM’s MathCounts team is unique because it’s coached by Upper School students. This year’s team coaches are: Alex Chen ’25, Chloe Chen ’27, Grace Chen ’27, Sami El-Hajjar ’27, Anand George ’26, Henry Ji ’28, Jind Kaur ’28, Iris Liu ’28, Simi Patel ’27, Harini Tallam ’26, Zara Vaseem ’26, Angela Wang ’26, and Raymond Yang ’27.

Many thanks to Sonal Shah, 7th grade math teacher and faculty liaison; Melissa Beihoff, 5th grade math teacher and faculty liaison; and Marcia Mihdawi, parent volunteer.
