University School of Milwaukee senior Autumn Heffernan ’25 has been awarded the Civic Music Milwaukee High School Award by the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee. Heffernan, who plays the flute, was nominated by Stephanie Hancock, director of bands at USM.
“Autumn has truly helped shape the culture of the band program at USM,” said Hancock. She is the consummate role model for the younger musicians in our program, leading with professionalism, enthusiasm, kindness and ever-growing musicianship. Autumn truly displays the qualities that I desire to see in every band student.”
As a musician, Heffernan was a member of the Flute Chamber Ensemble in the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra program and has studied flute privately for many years. At USM, she played in the pit orchestra for eight different musicals, and participated in the Solo and Ensemble Festival for three years, earning the opportunity to perform at the state level for two of those years. In addition, Heffernan is the co-host of the “Wish You Knew” podcast, which highlights mental health issues faced by teens and others.
