Brooklyn Easley ’29 Sets New Track Record

The varsity track meet on May 19 was anything but typical for Brooklyn Easley ’29, who set a new school record for the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.02 seconds. Easley credits a good night’s rest, confidence in her training, and the support of her community for the accomplishment. “With my competitive nature and love for the sport pushing me when times got tough, along with my parents' sacrifices, which got me to where I am today, and USM's outstanding coaches (shoutout to Ms. Young), I am truly grateful and owe it all to them,” she said.

Although she had a feeling she would break the record, she didn’t initially realize it when she crossed the finish line, until her team told her the news. “I can’t describe the joy I felt that day. We all just jumped up and down, smiling ear to ear.”

“Breaking a school record this early in a high school career says a lot about Brooklyn’s work ethic and potential,” said Kari Young, head coach and physical education teacher. “Most freshmen are learning the sport, but she's already making school history. It's exciting because it means this is only the beginning for her!”

The previous 100-meter hurdles record of 16.02 was set by Kate Collier ’04 in 2004.
