Gymnastics Headed to State

For the second year in a row, members of the University School of Milwaukee gymnastics team are headed to the state, with two athletes competing as individuals this year: Gabi Ortiz Fleet ’26 and Josie Merluzzi-Hitler ’26. Competing as a co-op with Shorewood High School, Ortiz Fleet and Merluzzi-Hitler qualified for state during the Division 2 sectionals competition on Friday, Feb. 27. The team finished in 3rd place with a score of 134.150.

At sectionals, Ortiz Fleet earned the all-around 1st place with a score of 35.85. She placed 1st in floor, 2nd in bars, 3rd in vault, and 10th in beam. Merluzzi-Hitler earned 4th place in all-around with a score of 35.1. She placed 2nd in floor, 4th in bars, 7th in beam, and 9th in vault. 

The other USM students competing at the gymnastics sectionals were Poppy Fetherston ’27, Anastasia Marich ’26, and Ksenija Marich ’29.

The Division 2 individual state competition will be held on Saturday, March 7 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.
