Holi Celebrated at USM

Holi Celebrated at USM

The Upper School South Asian affinity Group at University School of Milwaukee hosted a Holi celebration on Wednesday, May 27 after school. All members of the community were invited to participate and learn about South Asian traditions in a fun way.

Holi, the Hindu festival of colors, is a joyful celebration marking the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. It is celebrated by throwing colored powder and water on each other, often accompanied by vibrant music and dancing. The South Asian Affinity Group provided attendees with powder, which was made from food-grade cornstarch and baking soda, along with cosmetic grade dyes. To ensure a safe experience for everyone, they also provided protective goggles, and participants were encouraged to bring their own sunglasses or other eyewear for eye protection, along with a change of clothes and towel.

Many thanks to student members of the South Asian Affinity Group, including Harini Tallam 26, Aneesha Jayasuriya 26, Dhruva Pande 26, Deven Sharma 27, and Divya Rao 27 and Aneesha Rao 29, as well as Upper School English Teacher and faculty liaison Kiranjeet Kaur, who helped make this event happen.

This event supports USM’s mission and values and promotes recognition of and respect for diverse backgrounds and cultures to help students learn to think broadly, critically, and independently.
