MathCounts Team Competes at Regionals

Thirteen members of University School of Milwaukee’s Middle School MathCounts team competed at the MathCounts regional tournament held at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday, Feb. 7. USM’s team placed second in the team round, topping Bayside Middle School and Lakeshore Middle School, and finishing second behind Whitefish Bay Middle School.

Congratulations to the Middle School students who participated: Angel Barrutia ’32, Alex Lemieux ’31, Gigi Molnar-Kovoor ’32, Eli Mondano ’31, Ari Peri ’32, Moses Ramirez ’31, Sheel Sharma ’31, Jiyan Singh ’31, Mishee Singh ’30, Aleksey Strunets ’31, Nina Sugiyama Carter ’30, Sudarshan Tallam ’30, and Victor Wydra ’31.

Of those who competed at regionals, four are advancing to the state competition in March: Jiyan Singh, ranked 1st for the second year in a row; Mishee Signh, ranked 16th; Lemieux, ranked 27th; and Tallam, ranked 74th. The state tournament includes the top 100 mathletes from all over Wisconsin. Of those, the top four will compete at nationals.

USM’s MathCounts team is unique because it’s coached by Upper School students. This year’s team coaches are: Chloe Chen ’27, Grace Chen ’27, Sami El-Hajjar ’27, Anand George ’26, Henry Ji ’28, Jind Kaur ’28, Sophie Kouklin ’29, Simi Patel ’27, Kiran Ramanujam ’29, Harini Tallam ’26, Zara Vaseem ’26, Niki Wagner ’29, Angela Wang ’26, Raymond Yang ’27, and Sam Yuan ’29.

Many thanks to Sonal Shah, 7th grade math teacher and faculty liaison; Melissa Beihoff, 5th grade math teacher and faculty liaison; and parent volunteers Marcia Mihdawi and Renee Mondano.
