MathCounts Team Takes Seventh at State

Congratulations to the 2026 University School of Milwaukee MathCounts team members Alex Lemieux ’31, Sudarshan Tallam ’30, Jiyan Singh ’31, and Mishee Singh ’30, who secured a seventh place finish at the 2026 MathCounts state competition held in March in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The USM students competed against 30 of the top middle school math teams in the state. The team’s state appearance follows their second-place finish at regionals in February.

Jiyan Singh—who finished in second place at state—will advance to compete in MathCounts Nationals against the top four students from every state and U.S. territory. He also competed at MathCounts Nationals last year. In 2023, USM student and MathCounts team coach Sami El-Hajjar ’27 went to nationals, where he placed 22nd in the U.S. This year’s nationals will take place in Orlando, Florida, in early May.

USM’s MathCounts team is coached by Upper School students. This year’s team coaches are: Chloe Chen ’27, Grace Chen ’27, El-Hajjar, Anand George ’26, Henry Ji ’28, Jind Kaur ’28, Sophie Kouklin ’29, Simi Patel ’27, Kiran Ramanujam ’29, Harini Tallam ’26, Zara Vaseem ’26, Niki Wagner ’29, Angela Wang ’26, Raymond Yang ’27, and Sam Yuan ’29.

Many thanks to Sonal Shah, 7th grade math teacher and faculty liaison; Melissa Beihoff, 5th grade math teacher and faculty liaison; and parent volunteers Marcia Mihdawi and Renee Mondano.
