Researcher Jean Twenge on Raising Kids in a High-Tech World

University School of Milwaukee, in partnership with REDgen, hosted the first speaker series of the year on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Dr. Jean Twenge, a nationally recognized researcher, thinker, and writer, gave a free presentation open to USM parents and the greater Milwaukee community. Twenge’s research is primarily focused on technology and its impact on young people and understanding different generations, and her presentation was titled “Raising Kids in a High-Tech World.”

Twenge offered 10 rules for raising kids in a high-tech world, including no devices in the bedroom overnight, no social media until age 16, no phones during the school day bell to bell, and helping kids explore real-world freedom and responsibility.

USM parents can find a link to her presentation in the “All-School Announcements” section of the Tower Weekly newsletter emailed on Thursday, Feb. 12. Archived editions of Tower Weekly are also saved on each division’s Resource Board in myUSM.

In addition to the event presentation on Feb. 10, Twenge presented to both Middle School and Upper School students, and administrators, at USM on Feb. 11. She spoke to students about the correlation between social media use and mental health challenges, and the importance of establishing a healthy balance.
