USM Chess Team Has Strong Finishes in Three Competitions

Members of the University School of Milwaukee chess team competed in three recent competitions: the City Chess Championships; the 2026 State Scholastic Chess Championship; and the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation Grade Level Championships. The students had strong finishes in all events. Congratulations to the team members and Fred Lange, chess team coach and Upper School math teacher.

City Chess Championships

For the ninth year in a row, USM’s chess team won the City Chess Championships. Congratulations to team members Aradh Kaur ’26, Jind Kaur ’28, Jiyan Singh ’30, and Jason Wu ’27. USM’s team came in first place out of eight teams total, representing schools including Brookfield East High School, Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School, Milwaukee School of Languages, and Reagan High School.

2026 State Scholastic Chess Championship

More than 400 players from throughout Wisconsin competed in the State Scholastic Chess tournament on March 21 and 22 in Middleton, Wisconsin.

Although it was during USM’s spring break, four players competed: Aradh Kaur ’26, Jason Wu ’27, Jind Kaur ’28, and Jiyan Singh ’30. They were joined by alumni Hersh Singh ’25 and Chris Seaman ’93, along with coach Lange and parent volunteer Dr. Dalip Singh.

For the first time in USM’s chess history, Hersh Singh ’25 and Aradh Kaur ’26 took home the top bughouse trophy, while Jind Kaur ’28 and Jiyan Singh ’30 took sixth place in the bughouse. The USM team took second in terms of the school trophies.

The Upper School contestants were at a disadvantage, since they had to forfeit the fourth board, but they did manage fifth place out of the 18 teams in the varsity sections.
