USM Chess Team Wins State

Congratulations to the University School of Milwaukee K3 chess team, which took 1st place at the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation state meet in April. Team members were Escher Whitmore ’35, Jack Campbell ’37, Finn Campbell ’35, and Dane Beringause ’35. Whitmore took home the 2nd place individual trophy; Jack Campbell took home the 4th place individual trophy; Finn Campbell took home the 5th place individual trophy; and Beringause took home the 1st place team trophy. “Dane’s points were essential in getting the big team win, as the 2nd-place team was only half a point behind USM,” said Fred Lange, team coach and Upper School math teacher.

Also competing at the meet were Gus Bowie ’32, who won three of his five games in the K7 division; Evin Wanigatunga ’34, who won two of his five games in the K5 division; and Atticus Heron ’34, who won one of his five games in the K5 division.

Congratulations to all who competed!
