Middle School Hosts We Belong Week

Middle School Hosts We Belong Week

Members of the Project Belonging group at University School of Milwaukee hosted We Belong Week for all Middle School students from September 22 to 25. Much like last year’s Resilience Wednesdays, students had the opportunity to participate in optional daily activities centered around identity, belonging, and community.

Activities that the students planned included a “Belonging Bingo” game, a photo booth and games in the Middle School commons, a “compliment cafe” featuring kind notes, snacks, and lemonade, and a “guess the teacher” game with a chance to win raffle prizes.

Project Belonging is a student-driven program to develop resilient and connected communities, led by Teachers College, Columbia University. Through the program, the students completed an online course that taught them about the importance of connection, empathy, and being a supportive presence at school. They also learned about challenges that can make students feel isolated or out of place, such as not knowing many people, feeling different, or lacking a support network. They explored protective factors that can help students feel safe, valued, and included, like building friendships, sharing personal stories, and connecting through common interests.

Many thanks to the following Project Belonging students for planning the activities: Luke Drope '32, Annabelle Miller '32, Charlie Dawn Morgan '32, Adrian Nazaret '32, Greta Nicoli '32, Aarohi Sandhar '32, and Harold Wagner '32, and thanks to Shanee McCoy, director of inclusion, for serving as the faculty liaison for Project Belonging. Any Middle School students interested in participating should contact her.
