Service Learning
University School of Milwaukee believes that service to others prepares individuals for a lifetime of success and purpose. Service is so important that it is part of our mission statement, and our school encourages all students and community members to find ways to be of service to others.
Each year, students throughout the entire school host numerous service and volunteer events, both at USM and throughout the greater Milwaukee community. These events include:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
- Riverwest Food Pantry Project
- Milwaukee River Clean Up
- KIVA Arcade Micro Loans
- March to the Memorials
- Sophomore Service Retreat
- Food Pantry Donations
- Our Next Generation Tutoring
- Best Buddies Basketball Camps
In the Upper School, service learning is incorporated into the curriculum and is a requirement for graduation, including both in-school and out-of-school volunteer requirements. There is also a transcript distinction that students can earn in service leadership, which provides them with opportunities to explore issues of citizenship and service through cocurricular and elective classes and through service-related projects.
