USM Athletics Compete at State Championships
The boys’ lacrosse team won the Wisconsin State Invitational Tournament, and defeated Janesville by 9–6 in the event finals. Ryan Zwief ’20 led the way for the Wildcats, scoring five of USM’s goals.
After a nail-biting victory in the semi-finals of the Wisconsin Lacrosse Federation State Tournament, the girls’ lacrosse team reached the finals of tournament, where they lost to four-time defending state champion Arrowhead Red, 6–4.
The girls’ ski team finished 11th out of 21 teams in the Wisconsin High School Ski and Snowboard Championships held in February. Porter Westveer ’21 skied as an individual for USM in the boys’ state tournament, finishing 101st out of 155 in the boys’ individual standings.
Ben Hayes ’18, a member of the Brown Deer/University School boys’ swimming and diving team, won two first-place medals in the WIAA State Swimming Championships in February. Hayes won the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley. It is the second straight year that he has won two medals in the state tournament. Matt Le Pine ’18, Sam Lorge ’19, and Caleb Saffold ’20 also competed at state.
The USM boys’ tennis team took second place in the WIAA Division 2 Team Tennis State Championships, losing to Madison Edgewood. Matthew Cooper ’19, Addison Elliott ’20, Daniel Taleghani ’20, and Nabeel Quryshi ’18 competed in the WIAA Division 2 Individual Tennis State Championships. Taleghani won third place in the singles competition, and Cooper and Elliott finished in fourth place in doubles.
Kristen Chou ’19 represented USM’s track and field team in two events at the WIAA Division 2 State Track and Field Championships. She ran in the 100-yard dash, where she finished in 17th place with a time of 13.15 seconds, and the long jump, where she took fourth place with a jump of 17’ 6”.
