Doll-making 101

Second-grade students in Lower School Art Teacher Christina Dresang’s art class enjoyed a special visitor on Feb. 5—artist Coleen Bins from the Oneida Nations Art Program. Bins conducted workshops and taught students how to make corn husk dolls. Students learned about the origins of corn husk dolls and the many uses of the corn plant, and how Native Americans used (and continue to use) the natural resources available to them.

According to oral tradition, corn husk dolls do not have faces. This is a reminder to not think about ourselves too much, and to remember our responsibilities to others and to the world around us.
