USM Athletes Compete at State Championships
Although the season ended with a loss to Green Bay Notre Dame in the WIAA Division I Boys Hockey State Tournament semifinals, the players earned many accolades. The team earned the 2020 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association team sportsmanship award, which is the first time USM’s boys’ hockey program has earned the award. Winners are determined by the conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, cheer and support groups, mascots, bands, and spectators. In addition, several players were recognized for their performance: Alex Thundercloud ’20 was named defenseman of the year and named to the state tournament second team; Tyler Herzberg ’20 was a player of the year finalist and named to the state tournament second team; and Noah Eghbali ’21 was named to the state tournament first team.
Caleb Saffold ’20 took 16th place in the 100-yard breaststroke at the WIAA State Swimming Championships in February.
After winning sectionals in the 152-pound class, Connor Dyke ’20 (far right) became the first USM wrestler to compete at the WIAA 2020 state tournament. He was also the 2020 recipient of the Nathan Potter Heart Award, presented annually to the USM-Whitefish Bay co-op wrestler who best reflects Potter’s commitment, persistence, effort, and grit.
Porter Westveer ’21 competed in the Wisconsin High School Ski and Snowboard Championships in February. In addition, he earned the Midwest High School Athletic Achievement Award First Team All-Conference for 2020, and second place in the Midwest Alpine Racing Second Boys U18 for 2020.
