USM Athletes Compete at State Championships

USM Athletes Compete at State Championships
The boys hockey team celebrates after advancing to the state championship tournament.

Although the season ended with a loss to Green Bay Notre Dame in the WIAA Division I Boys Hockey State Tournament semifinals, the players earned many accolades. The team earned the 2020 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association team sportsmanship award, which is the first time USM’s boys’ hockey program has earned the award. Winners are determined by the conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, cheer and support groups, mascots, bands, and spectators. In addition, several players were recognized for their performance: Alex Thundercloud ’20 was named defenseman of the year and named to the state tournament second team; Tyler Herzberg ’20 was a player of the year finalist and named to the state tournament second team; and Noah Eghbali ’21 was named to the state tournament first team.

He was also the 2020 recipient of the Nathan Potter Heart Award, presented annually to the USM-Whitefish Bay co-op wrestler who best reflects Potter’s commitment, persistence, effort, and grit.
