Scholarships

Through the generosity of donors, University School of Milwaukee provides scholarship opportunities to outstanding students throughout the greater Milwaukee area. Several types of scholarships are available to students: major scholarships, merit scholarships, and endowed scholarships. Full-tuition Scholarships for Upper School Students

Joe Lubar '08 Scholarship

In 2012, the Lubar family established the Joseph Lubar Scholarship to honor the memory of their son, Joe Lubar ’08. This is a four-year, full-tuition scholarship for a student new to USM entering the 9th grade. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student from the greater Milwaukee area who has demonstrated academic potential, leadership, and excellence in extracurricular involvements and community service.

John Stephens Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes the distinguished career of long time teacher, John Stephens (often referred to as “JS”). During his 46-year tenure with USM (and one of its predecessor schools, Milwaukee Country Day School), Stephens served as Upper School head, director of admissions, and department chair of the History department. This scholarship was established by a USM alumnus to recognize Stephens devotion to teaching. This scholarship can be awarded to either a rising 9th grader from USM's Middle School or a 9th grade student who is new to USM.

STAR Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2014 by a USM family with several children who graduated from the school and a number of grandchildren who are current students. The STAR Scholarship recognizes the achievements of a student in the areas of academics, leadership, service, and extracurricular activities while honoring two USM faculty members. Scholarship recipients must be rising 9th graders who are new to USM, reside in the greater Milwaukee area, and be members of traditionally underrepresented minority groups.

Milwaukee College Prep Scholarship

This scholarship, established in 2014 by several USM families with strong ties to Milwaukee College Prep (MCP) school, is offered to one outstanding student entering the 9th grade. The scholarship recipient must be an alumna/us of MCP with a strong academic record and character. This scholarship covers tuition and other expenses that comprise the cost of attendance at USM.

Merit Scholarships for Students Entering 7th through 11th Grades

Merit scholarships are awarded to students entering 7th through 11th grades who are new to USM. These partial scholarships are awarded to students with outstanding academic records and the potential to contribute to the school in meaningful ways. There is no formal application for these scholarships; the credentials of an applicant’s admission application are reviewed as part of the award process. Scholarships are awarded on a limited basis and, if awarded, will be communicated to the family when a student is admitted to USM. Scholarship recipients will be required to provide regular updates about their academic and extracurricular progress.

Endowed Scholarships

Dating back to its predecessor schools, USM offers a variety of endowed partial scholarships. To qualify for one of these scholarships, a family must demonstrate financial need by completing the Clarity Financial application and meet the specific criteria of an endowed scholarship fund. Families who are awarded one of these scholarships will be notified by the Enrollment Management office. Scholarship recipients will be required to provide regular updates about their academic and extracurricular progress.

Uihlein Scholarship Fund for Children of Alumni

Uihlein Scholarship Fund for Children of Alumni

In 1994, when it became apparent to alumni Polly MDS'38 and Henry Uihlein MCDS'39 that there were other alumni who were considering a USM education for their own children who were candidates for financial assistance, they established a scholarship fund to increase accessibility of a USM education for children of alumni. Since its inception, the fund has awarded more than 550 scholarship grants, totaling more than $1.5 million.

Children of USM alumni (alumni who attended USM or a predecessor school for at least four years) and who qualify for financial assistance are eligible to apply for the Polly and Henry Uihlein Alumni Scholarship. Applicants who are also applying for tuition assistance must submit an application to Clarity Financial and be verified through the program.

About the Uihlein Family

The Uihleins have a long history with the school. In addition to both being graduates of predecessor schools, their four sons also attended USM or a merger school—Chip MCDS’63, Chris ’65, Phil ’68, and Richard ’72. As parents in an independent school community, Henry and Polly recognized the important role alumni play in the life of the school, through their involvement as volunteers and donors, as well as enriching the community experience through their institutional history.

Wanting to broaden the impact of their support, the Uihleins made an extraordinary commitment to the school in 2004, during USM’s Next Generation Campaign. They designated a bequest in their estate to support both the Scholarship Fund and the Henry and Polly Uihlein Faculty Fund, another endowed fund they established in 1989. These commitments were predicated on their belief that all USM alumni should not only support the school during their lifetimes, but also extend their support in their estate plans.

Following Henry Uihlein’s death in August 2011, a significant portion of their bequest was transferred to the school, increasing the amount of financial assistance now available through the fund.

The Uihlein family’s leadership support has spanned multiple generations and, in many ways, helped shape the USM of today. In addition to the establishment of the Scholarship Fund and the Faculty Fund, they provided support for the ice rink renovations and the hockey program, and they consistently supported Holiday Shops and the USM Fund.
