What To Bring

We encourage families to review this helpful guide to determine what equipment they need for skating and hockey classes.

  • Helmet: A ski or hockey helmet is essential for safety. Make sure it fits properly and provides adequate protection for your head.
  • Warm jacket: Choose a jacket that is insulated and waterproof to keep you warm and dry.
  • Snow pants: Opt for snow pants or fleece pants that are waterproof and insulated to keep your legs warm and dry while skating. Snow pants are required for USM PE classes, and encouraged for younger Learn to Skate participants.
  • Mittens/gloves: Mittens or gloves are crucial for protecting your hands from the cold and preventing injury while skating. Make sure they provide adequate insulation and protection.
  • Socks: Especially in summer sessions, don't forget to pack a pair of lightweight socks. Thick socks should be avoided as they can cause fit issues and blisters. Opt for snug-fitting breathable socks to prevent any discomfort during your time on the ice.
  • Skates: If you own skates, don't forget to bring them. If you don't, you can reserve skates.
  • Snacks: Pack snacks, especially for longer sessions over an hour, to keep yourself fueled and energized during your activities. USM is an allergy-aware community, please refrain from bringing any nut products to campus.

Skate Guide

To maximize your enjoyment and progress in our skating sessions, it's crucial to have the right equipment. Ensure your skates provide excellent ankle support and have evenly sharpened blades, whether they are hockey or figure skates. Your skates should fit snugly to minimize toe movement and prevent heel lift.
